a day of sadness

friday is celebrated as the traditional day of sadness. the whole catholic church mourns the death of our savior. we also call this day a holy friday, an obligatory day of fasting and abstinence. during fast we of course still eat but we abstain from certain foodstuffs and give up some luxury items from our diet such as meat. i usually do this entirely during the holy friday.

but apparently, not this friday. can you imagine a catholic devotee found himself working on good friday? i was outraged of the fact that i celebrated friday at work while others, whom, not a follower of these tradition are the ones in the moods for enjoyment. where's the message in that?

i realized there was one. that is, giving up my day off. although it is not all about giving things up, it is also about adding good things to our lives and to other's lives. giving up something simple or small during the lent is somewhat a reflections of awareness of sin or sorrow over it. like fasting, it is one of the obligatories that catholics usually do. we soberly look into ourselves and getting down to what is real.

in my province, friday is associated with the crucifixion of Jesus which is solemnly celebrated with the traditions to re-enact Jesus' procession to the cross in the ritual known as the stations of the cross. it is being held at 3 o'clock in the afternoon to symbolize Jesus' last hour on the cross. we usually gathered altogether by doing activities such as turning off the tv, radio and generally agreed on each other by talking silently.

while at work, i've spent few of my time reading news online as regards to the lent. i went through this site where they featured an old shroud that bears the image of Jesus Christ. it is believed by many that this is the most awesome relic of Jesus Christ in existence. there were many skeptics believed that this is a hoax and the historical issues provided by the shroud remains a questions to many. the holy linen is also known as the Shroud Of Turin. the shroud is about 4.2 metre long, 90cm wide linen sheet with the front and back image.

it gives me a theory of whether this images is a sacred relic or a religious hoax? for whatever reason that caused of these images is something that cannot copy with our own technology even now. this is too miraculous not to be a miracle. it is extremely difficult to make a fake with that image. like mel gibson's movie, the passion of the christ 'the shroud opens the window into the hearts of those who view it.'

i'll search for that book. coincidentally, the title is similar to sean connery's 1986 mystery movie. ty.

I've read the book "The Name of the Rose". (fiction) It has a very interesting theory of why the shroud is still not recognized by the catholic church.

it really fascinates me and we hope that someone must take this importantly towards discovering the truth behind it. and accdg to articles, for 17 yrs the shroud has been condemned as forgery, and catholic church would eager to find the truth.

makes me wonder with all its overwhelming evidence, i wanna know the correct explanation. i'm still at shock.

Years ago they reckoned they had proved the shroud to be a hoax from the 12th century.
Now, they discover that the samples were taken from REPAIRED areas of the shroud (it was rescued in a fire). They now see the unique stitching as being from the right era to possibly be authentic. They may test again, using better carbon dating technology.

Make you think, huh?
I for one am a believer.
